Quick answers for the choices that are easy to miss in an early run.
Game Over occurs when no firing defenses remain, or when your active Research Core is destroyed. Tower 2 is merge material and cannot keep the defense alive by itself.
Its destruction triggers Game Over—even if other towers are still standing. Protect the marked Core; a different high-tier tower does not replace it automatically. The Core keeps its identity when it moves or merges into a higher tier. The Cure Project →
A valid checkpoint can offer a free restore from the Game Over screen. Paid or ad revival cannot bypass Core loss. If no valid checkpoint is available, a restore is not offered.
No. The resulting board returns to defense, and you can prepare for a later scheduled opportunity. Core destruction and losing all firing defenses are separate defeat conditions. Core Merge guide →

Do not count on a merge as a full repair. Check the resulting tower and plan around the board you actually have.
A stronger tower can help, but placement and coverage still matter. Before merging, consider which sides will keep an active defense and which threats those towers can reach.
Read the tier named on the card. A tower that merges into a different tier is no longer the named tier. Check which towers still qualify instead of assuming the effect follows every merge.
